Safety training for RV Investigator’s support staff

Eight support staff from CSIRO recently headed off to the pool to take part in the Elements of Shipboard Safety Course, run by Seafood Training Tasmania.

In the mix were Tegan Sime, who is an Operations Officer for the Marine National Facility, and Stewart Wilde who is part of Data Acquisition and Processing, in the Science Engineering and Technology section, at CSIRO in Hobart.

Both Tegan and Stewart were good sports when the local newspaper, the Mercury, sent along a photographer to take photos of the training. Check out the !

RV Investigatgor decked out!

The front, rear and 02 Level decks, of Australia’s new Marine National Facility research vessel, Investigator, are ready for science!

These photos were taken on the recent scientific sea trials.

Testing the CTD system onboard Investigator

CTD stands for conductivity (salinity), temperature and depth.

The system that deploys this equipment from  RV Investigator’s CTD laboratory, out and over the side of the ship and into the water, was tested during sea trials.

Scientific sea trials onboard RV Investigator

RV Investigator has been out doing sea trials, to test some of the scientific equipment onboard.

All lit up and getting ready to go!

Capturing our underwater world!

One of the coolest pieces of equipment we’ve got onboard Australia’s new Marine National Facility research vessel, Investigator, is also one of the smallest.

RV Investigator's keel camera

It’s a camera, fitted onto one of Investigator’s drop keels!

While this nifty device is primarily being installed as part of the sonar performance verification program for the ship, it’s also going to be used to capture images of the marine environment.

It’s not unusual for some species like dolphins, to be attracted to moving ships, like in this photo snapped from onboard Southern Surveyor, and now we’ll be able to film species and marine environments, as we’re steaming along!A dolphin surfaces near Southern Surveyor (image Beatriz Britto Pereira)
