We’re looking for several, suitably qualified, swath technicians for RV Investigator

Later this year the MNF will take delivery of Investigator, a new state-of-the-art, research vessel capable of carry up to 40 scientists and support staff, on voyages that can last for 60 days, to destinations like Antarctica, the Southern, Indian and Pacific Oceans and up into the oceans near East Timor.

The delivery of Investigator to Hobart, Australia, means the MNF needs more support staff, some of whom will go to sea, while others will gladly stand and the wharf and wave others off.

If you can see yourself as part of this team, as a swath technician, then check out the multiple positions at the CSIRO Careers portal http://www.csiro.au/Portals/Careers.aspx.

For more information on Australia’s Marine National Facility go to http://www.marine.csiro.au/nationalfacility/.

Applications and inquiries can ONLY be received via the CSIRO Careers portal.

Beam me up Scotty!

RV Investigator's weather research radar

Well maybe I got a bit carried away…

This is our incredible weather research radar under construction!

Remember we told you about it back in April, when we announced that the successful contractor to supply the radar was Environmental Systems & Services?

They’re an Australian advanced technology company, specialising in solutions in environmental and allied fields such as meteorology.

Here are more photos of the work being undertaken before shipping it to Singapore for installation. In the last one you’ll see Dr Lindsay Pender, from the Future Research Vessel Project Technical Team, who undertook the factory acceptance testing.

Check out this recently produced video from onboard the MNF’s current research vessel, Southern Surveyor, showing some of the work that occurs onboard.

Come and watch the sunset over the Indian, Pacific and Southern Oceans…

Over the years Australia’s Marine National Facility research vessel Southern Surveyor has been at sea for thousands of sunsets and the scientists and support staff have snapped the incredible colours, reflections and cloud formations.

The photos are magic, so come and run away to sea with us just for a moment!

Come on a tour of RV Investigator with our VIPs!

We recently had the Chair of CSIRO, Simon McKeon, and CSIRO’s Deputy Chief Executive, Craig Roy, in the shipyard in Singapore to tour the ship and inspect the work on site at the Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore, with the Executive Director of the Future Research Vessel Project, Toni Moate.

Why don’t you come on board for a tour with our VIPs, to see the latest fabulous photos inside RV Investigator?

It’s great when it all comes together!

Remember the team photo in Spain, followed by the mystery box that was unloaded last year, and the fabulous blue propulsion motors that were unpacked and lifted into place?

Well I’ve just been sent a photo from deep within the heart of Australia’s new Marine National Facility research vessel, Investigator, showing the propulsion motors in place.

It’s great when it all comes to together!

Touring Southern Surveyor with Kirrily Moore, our joint Float-a-Name winner!

Three years ago we ran a national competition, to find a name for our new research vessel.

Investigator  was chosen as it linked the then planned $120 million research vessel to Australia’s maritime history – Matthew Flinders first circumnavigated the continent in His Majesty’s sloop Investigator. Two people came up with Investigator in their entry, and we awarded them joint winners. Queensland school girl, Clare Cameron, proposed The Flinders Investigator, and Tasmanian-based scientist, Kirrily Moore, entered the name, The Investigator.

Last week, we presented Kirrily Moore with a LEGO® Investigator and we invited her son’s class, from Mount Stuart Primary School in Hobart, to tour Southern Surveyor.

We all had a fabulous time!

A special thanks to Alastair Graham, the Manager of the Australian National Fish Collection, which is located at the CSIRO Laboratories in Hobart, who loaned us some fish samples, to show the group the kinds of species collected by scientists on board Southern Surveyor.
