Marine National Facility (MNF)
What is the MNF?
Australia’s Marine National Facility (MNF) is a blue-water research capability, funded by the Australian Government and operated by CSIRO.
The MNF comprises:
- a blue-water research capability, currently the 66 metre research vessel Southern Surveyor
- a suite of scientific equipment and instrumentation
- a collection of more than 25 years of marine data, and
- the expertise and systems required to manage blue-water research and support research vessel users.
In 2013, Southern Surveyor will be replaced by a new vessel RV Investigator.
Can I use the MNF?
The MNF is available to all Australian scientists and their international collaborators, with access granted on the basis of proposals that are internationally peer reviewed, and independently assessed for science quality and contribution to the national interest.
How is the MNF managed?
The MNF is overseen by a Steering Committee appointed by the Minister for Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education, with representatives from academia, industry and government.
